One of the First of his Kind

From the Streets of Detroit to a Service Dog Prospect for a Veteran!!

We don’t know much about Yukon’s life prior to October 2015 or how he ended up at Detroit Animal Care & Control. What we do know is that he was one of the lucky ones to have arrived there as it was undergoing great changes. Instead of being euthanized following his stray hold, this fun-loving boy was among the first dogs we transferred in from DACC as part of a new program to save more lives by releasing dogs to rescue groups.

Now, Life’s a party with Yukon! Yukon is an active pup who enjoys spending time with his people. He cries a little when he’s nervous, but enjoys listening to music to help calm him down. Yukon loves to go for long walks and play fetch (fenced yard required). If you are looking for a playmate for your dog, we will help introduce Yukon to your pup to make sure they are lifelong pals. He would do best in a home with older children and without cats. Yukon is 2 years old, 56 pounds, neutered, up-to-date on vaccines, micro-chipped, house-trained and crate trained. He’s ready to go! If you’re looking for a new best friend, Yukon is all the fun you’ve been waiting for!

From Detroit strays, to the DBC program, to Graduates of the Stiggy’s Dogs program. Congrats to Norton and Yukon!!

Graduation Day

November 22, 2016

A very bitter sweet departure: Yukon came to DBC via Detroit Animal Control in 2015. He has been a happy go lucky canine , eager to learn & please since day one. We invested many hours into his training & building a bond with him. To see him leave DBC as a service canine prospect for the Stiggy’s Dogs program is nothing short of amazing. Yukon will make an amazing working companion for the Veteran he is paired with after finishing his training.

Yukon left today with Donna, Stiggy’s lead trainer for the thumb correctional facility where he will go through his basic handling & a matched inmate will guide Yukon through his basic requirements to move forward into service dog training , including public access. We are so grateful for programs such as Stiggy’s Dogs & we are eternally grateful for our working relationship!

On Thursday November 17th, Norton, an emaciated dog we pulled from Michigan Humane Society also went into this same program to become a Service Dog Prospect.  We couldn’t be happier for these two amazing canines!  They are both STARs!!

Here is Norton’s post: GREAT NEWS!!!!!!!! Norton has been selected for the S.T.A.R. Program: Stiggy’s Training And Renew. DBC has had a long standing relationship with Stiggy’s Dogs, Our relationship began in 2012. In 2012 Stiggy’s accepted a DBC canine Brody ( Camo). Stiggy’s Dogs is an awesome program that pairs canines with Veterans. So here is the process, Norton will go through the STAR program which takes place at the Thumb Correctional Facility. The inmates have been fully trained as handlers & as trainers. The canines receive all their basic training while in the care of the inmates. Once the canine goes through basic training, the canine is then paired & placed with a veteran. The final result will be a canine with full service canine credentials including public access.
